From Sensors to Cents: Bringing IoT Data into the ERP

Challenges

A fast-growing manufacturing company in the agricultural space was facing a data disconnect. Specializing in cultivating high-yield agricultural products, they needed to understand exactly how much it cost to produce each product across the various fields and seasons —down to the quantity of crop protection products & agrochemicals used on each field.

Historically, they relied on estimates and rolled costs into their bottom line without clear visibility. With massive IoT-enabled tractors spraying & broadcasting the fields and recording product usage  data, the challenge became clear: how do you turn that raw data into actionable costing information?

FD’s Approach

Frazier & Deeter partnered with the company to bridge the gap between operational data and financial reporting. Our team developed tools to pull sensor data from tractors, tracking the precise flow of chemicals applied to specific plots of land, and transform it into information consumable by their ERP system. This unlocked the ability to align location specific application data with cost centers and products to show the true cost of goods sold.

Rather than pushing for a full system overhaul, FD helped build practical workarounds. We created tools for field operators to manage procurement needs, like fuel requests, and track spending. These solutions allowed the company to start applying data in smarter ways, simplifying their costing processes without needing to rip and replace existing systems.

The Outcome

The company moved from guesswork to data-driven decision-making. They now understand exactly what inputs go into each product, can accurately assess profitability by grass type and plot and are making informed pricing decisions. What used to be buried in broad expense lines is now detailed, traceable and actionable—empowering their team to answer a critical question with confidence: are we making or losing money?
