|The European Union’s (EU’s) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was a dramatic update of privacy laws designed to protect citizens of the EU. While GDPR made headlines because of its substantial penalties, U.S. companies without European operations may have felt they didn’t need to react.
Now, the trend of increased safeguards governing personal information has arrived in the U.S. Legislation in California and New York, but that only the beginning. Several states are discussing strict new laws and possible Federal legislation.
The future may hold a confusing mosaic of laws and penalties applying to different jurisdictions.
