The European Union’s (EU’s) General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR) was a dramatic update of privacy laws designed to protect citizens of the EU. While GDPR made headlines because of its substantial penalties, U.S. companies without European operations may have felt they didn’t need to react to data privacy.

Now the trend of increased safeguards governing personal information has arrived in the U.S. Legislation in California and New York, which was only the beginning, and several states are discussing strict new laws and possible Federal legislation.
