Blogging Insights – 5 Steps to Build a Blog Worthy of Attention
A few years back I started the Atlanta Bloggers Community and we discussed the best way to build, grow and expand a blog. There are many elements and aspects to a blog. I really want to help you understand the purpose and being for your blog. Here are 5 steps you can do to really get your blog off on the right foot.
1. Make sure you understand your audience. Really ask yourself, who will be reading it. What persona of person will it be that you want to reach? The most successful blogs have a very targeted audience and they know who they are and what they like. The more you narrow your focus on the group, the more you will reach them and truly help them because you took the time to understand them. One of the worst mistakes made is writing for a very general audience. You are setting sail with no destination in mind and no map is necessary.
2. Write for the Audience and Not You – Do not try to use the blog to sell your products or services. This is not advertising. The power of your blog is a place to show expertise and win over through influence. If you do have a product or service that could solve their problem, it is OK to say, check out our solution and use a hyperlink to another landing page if they choose to click on for more info. Seek to understand what is keeping your audience up at night and spend every word trying to provide solutions.
3. Write for humans not robots. Once we know the audience and what issues they are seeking solutions to, the content becomes a lot clearer. We can write to a very specific audience who has similar needs & problems that we can help provide solutions to. It is OK to use keywords, but don’t overdo it. If you write good quality content that the audience craves… They will seek you out for this insight. The fastest ways to discover those hot buttons is by interviewing and asking them and seek to understand what you can provide clarity and answers.
4. Snackable Content - The information needs to be easy to scan and in snackable sizes. Don’t do an ebook for a post. Garnering attention in a world filled with more distractions and information can be extremely difficult. Make a post with a list like the one I have done here or give a few tidbits of insight in about 500 words. It will be more powerful to the reader when they can see the end and see it won’t require an immense amount of time. If you have a very lengthy post, see if you can split into 2 or more. If the post is very time sensitive and your audience needs this info in one setting, I suggest making the first paragraph or two very broad and then inviting the reader to read the rest of the article and what the learning points are and what will be covered and why they should invest reading.
5. Exceeding Value – Give so much value in your content that everyone who reads will take notice. Be such an expert on the topics you write about that the value far exceeds the time they gave up by reading it. Everyone who wants to know about that topic comes to see what you have to say about it. Even other experts want to know what your take is on the subject. This is important because it can open up doors for guests posts on specific industry sites, interviews with high profile news organizations & media.
Simply remember you will get more bees with honey. They don’t care about you because they care about themselves. People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care. Make it your business to show them you care about them and their problems. You will win over more fans and create more of a loyal following than you ever thought possible.
